Are JDM engines generally reliable or risky?

Hi,

Does anyone have personal experience with JDM engine reliability? Searching the net I've come up with lots of opinions, but most aren't based first-hand knowledge. Some say Japanese drivers know they will have to get rid of their engines young, so they abuse them and don't change the oil. Others say that's baloney, that the Japanese take care of their cars just fine, and these are good buys. Anyone have first-hand experience with buying a JDM, and/or knowledge of this industry?

Any idea?
